What research supports – and what ARM-3 currently hypothesizes.
ARM-3 is not an established psychological test and not a clinical diagnostic instrument. The taxonomy rationabile – rationale – rationalizans is a theoretical synthesis. Its components, however, connect to existing research.
Relevant findings exist, but they are limited or cannot be transferred directly to ARM-3.
A new theoretical relationship is derived from existing findings.
A concrete prediction that can later be confirmed or falsified.
Four research fields behind ARM-3
Motivated Reasoning
Motivation can influence which cognitive strategies are used to construct and evaluate beliefs. Desired conclusions are not generated arbitrarily; they require subjectively plausible justifications.
Belief Updating & Evidence Evaluation
Current theory distinguishes the actual updating of a belief from upstream processes such as information search, evidence acceptance, hypothesis selection, and interpretation. These processes can themselves be heuristically and motivationally biased.
Actively Open-Minded Thinking
AOT includes willingness to consider alternatives, take contradictory evidence seriously, avoid premature closure, and think reflectively. This directly overlaps with the ARM-3 component Cognitive Flexibility.
Intellectual Humility
Research conceptualizes Intellectual Humility, among other things, as a metacognitive capacity to recognize the limits of one’s own knowledge and beliefs. It provides an important connection to revisability and EMC.
What the model additionally claims
Model Revision Cost
The more strongly a belief is linked to self-image, biography, status, group membership, or prior decisions, the higher the subjective costs of fundamental revision may become.
Rationalization Pressure
Rationalization Pressure should increase when Model Commitment, Revision Cost, and Threat are high while Cognitive Flexibility and metacognitive control are relatively weak.
Elaborate Rationalizans
High Cognitive Activation does not necessarily prevent rationalization. Under high Rationalization Pressure, it may instead enable more complex and persuasive model defense.
State Transition
Epistemic rationality is context-dependent. The relevant quantity is therefore not only a trait profile, but also the change between neutral and threatening conditions.
16 archetypes as testable prototypes.
The archetypes condense characteristic configurations of ARM-3 dimensions into theoretical comparison profiles. They are not diagnoses and are not yet empirically confirmed natural classes. Validation is intended to determine whether the 16 prototypes reproduce as discrete clusters, continuous transitions, or partly overlapping profiles.
Reference points rather than boxes. The 16 archetypes mark ideal-typical reference points within a multidimensional profile space. An individual result can lie between several reference points and therefore resemble more than one prototype. Mixed modes are thus an explicit part of the model rather than an exception.
Example: A profile may simultaneously resemble the Practical Rationale (RA1) and the Analytical Rationale (RA3), yielding a practical-analytical Rationale profile. The 120 two-prototype mixtures are the unordered pairings of the 16 prototypes; if primary versus secondary weighting is additionally taken into account, there are 240 directed combinations. These combinations are not additional fixed “types”, but positions and weightings within the same profile space.

Animal rationabile
Capacity for reason is present, but it is not consistently mobilized as active, metacognitively controlled model testing.
Passive Rationabile
Low voluntary cognitive engagement with comparatively low defensive binding. Capacity is available, but only weakly mobilized.
Intuitive Rationabile
Judgments rely more strongly on intuitive and affective processing; metacognitive monitoring and active testing of countermodels remain weaker.
Conforming Rationabile
Social consensus and group or identity pressure shape evidence evaluation more strongly than independent, effortful examination.
Certainty-Seeking Rationabile
Relatively active cognition meets low uncertainty tolerance. Open epistemic situations create a strong preference for closure and certainty.
Animal rationale
Cognitive resources are used predominantly for testing, revision, and tolerating epistemic uncertainty.
Practical Rationale
Solid metacognitive and revision-oriented processing without extreme scores. Decisions remain pragmatic and correctable.
Open Rationale
Very high openness to alternatives, fallibility, and uncertainty. Counterevidence can comparatively readily alter the existing model.
Analytical Rationale
Very high cognitive performance and voluntary analysis combined with strong metacognitive and evidence-open processing.
Reflective Rationale
Especially strong monitoring of one’s own thinking, high intellectual humility, and pronounced willingness to revise when reasons warrant it.
Stable Rationale
Epistemic openness remains comparatively stable under situational pressure; defensive influence axes are especially low in the prototype.
Animal rationalizans
Cognitive activity remains present, but under commitment or threat it is increasingly used to stabilize and defend the existing model.
High-Performance Rationalizans
Very high cognitive performance and engagement with reduced openness under elevated ego and commitment binding. Rationalization may become particularly elaborate.
Ego-Defensive Rationalizans
Contradiction primarily threatens self-image and perceived competence; argumentative resources are used more strongly to stabilize the ego-related model.
Status-Defensive Rationalizans
Loss of face, rank, and public competence impressions increase model protection more strongly than other threat axes.
Identity-Protective Rationalizans
Group membership, loyalty, or identity more strongly shape which evidence is accepted, discounted, or rejected.
Commitment-Defensive Rationalizans
Prior investments, public commitments, and sunk costs make revision subjectively expensive and encourage defense of the existing position.
Affective Rationalizans
Affective load—such as anger, hurt, or fear—shifts evidence evaluation and reduces metacognitive distance from one’s own model.
Dogmatic Rationalizans
Very low openness, humility, and uncertainty tolerance combine with high commitment binding; the model is defended especially rigidly.
The profile markers are a simplified reading of the comparison vectors currently encoded in Instrument v1.0. Validation does not ask whether the labels sound plausible, but whether real data reproduce the expected configurations, distances, and transitions. Archetypes may therefore be merged, modified, or discarded in later instrument versions.
Age is not a rationalizans trait.
ARM-3 does not posit a direct relationship of “older = more rationalizing.” Only an indirect hypothesis is plausible: world models consolidated over long periods may be more strongly bound to biography and may carry higher revision costs. At the same time, some fluid and executive functions change heterogeneously with age.
One small study found reduced updating in older adults for undesirable, but not desirable, information. This is an empirical point of connection, not evidence for the ARM-3 causal chain.
How ARM-3 is intended to become falsifiable
Higher Model Commitment should be associated with more asymmetric evidence evaluation under identical counterevidence, unless compensatory control is present.
Higher subjective Model Revision Cost should reduce willingness to fundamentally revise a belief.
High Cognitive Flexibility should weaken the relationship between revision costs and rationalizing processing.
High EMC should reduce the discrepancy between evaluation of confirming and disconfirming evidence.
High Cognitive Activation alone should not prevent rationalizans behavior; under high RP, it may be associated with more elaborate rationalization.
Chronological age should not independently predict Rationalization Pressure once relevant mediators and moderators are taken into account.
